How fine a feed to acetal plastic?

Post by tony@advanced-comms.co... »

Subject says it all. I will be using HSS sharp tooling (or do I need a radius?) and I need a good finish but does not need to be perfect. I assume like ali the fastest speed on the spindle will be required?

Boxford model B and I think I have all the needed change wheels to get the finest feed on the chart. I have a really fine feed now made up from some esoteric set of change wheels which I am happy to get rid of as its very slow.

How fine a feed to acetal plastic?

Quite the opposite from aluminium. Slower is better. Use a very sharp cutter like solid carbide AluPower cutters and go low on RPM and fairly fast on feed. If you go too fast on the RPM you will not get clean edges but rather fluffy or burred edges that is caused by the material melting where it is thin. On the edges.
You want decent sized big chips to come off.

Boxford model B and I think I have all the needed change wheels to get the finest feed on the chart. I have a really fine feed now made up from some esoteric set of change wheels which I am happy to get rid of as its very slow.
Acetal recommended cutting speeds and feeds are

Acetal 20% glass HSS tooling 338 Feet per Minute .016 inch depth of cut
Carbide 750 FPM at .024 DOC
Insert 1290 FPM at .3 DOC
Acetal - copolymer HSS 363 FPM at .017 DOC
Acetal - homopolymer HSS 375 FPM at .017 DOC

Carbide and Insert - same FPM and DOC for all types.

So for instance turning a 1" diameter gives

MATERIAL= Acetal - 20% Glass
SURFACE SPEED= 338 FPM
CUTTING TOOL MATERIAL= HSS
NOMINAL STOCK DIAMETER= 1 inches 25.4 mm
DEPTH OF PASS= 0.016 inches
SPINDLE SPEED= 1312 RPM
FEEDRATE= 10.28608 IPM 0.00784 IPR 261.26643 mmPM 0.19914 mmPR
MATERIAL REMOVAL RATE= 0.50878 in³/min
MATERIAL POWER CONSTANT= 0.35
REQUIRED HORSEPOWER= 0.2095
