V carve, depth per pass

Post by jacala »

Hello Les!

For some reason the V carve module does not listen to the maximum depth per pass that I enter,

So I want to carve letters 10 mm deep in 2 passes but it does the job in 1 pass. Not to good for the V carving bit.

Settings are normal like a standard flute bit.

Thanks for your input!

V carve doesn't have a depth per pass. Do you mean the maximum depth? I just checked here and maximum depth appears to do what you would expect.

Hi Les,

Thanks for the fast reply

no real problem, then I just have to search for better V carving bits ;)

Hello Les,

I am having may be the same question like jakala.

If I set up the V-Carving bit I can give a "depth per pass" value.

(I do not mean the Maximum Depth given for the V-Carving Task)

I have a bigger v-bit with a cutter length of 26mm - no matter if save "depth per pass" with 2 mm, it runs into the material all the way down to "Maximum depth". This can be about 15mm in one pass :(

I can work around it a bit by having multiple V-Care Tasks with Maximum Depths incementing by 2 mm but that's not very comfortable...

Kind Regards,

Markus

The 'depth per pass' option in the tool definition is ignored by the V carve operation. It is only used by contour and pocket operations.
I took a look at the code and it should not be too bad to add depth per pass. I will investigate further.

Hello Les,

I just udpated to the latest 7.0.10 and had the hope that this is now fixed - but looking at the simulation it does not look like :(
Having a bigger v-Carve bit (90°, D=40mm) and larger text, it partly goes way to deep into the material in one cut.
A parameter for Offset would also be cool!

Thank you very much :)

just a suggestion..... what about if you set up two different tools.....

A roughing tool which is set as being say 2mm larger in diameter and 2mm longer than your actual tool.

And then the "finishing" tool which is exactly the tool dimensions....

That way the v-carve operation will leave 2mm of material on the sides and bottom of the cut which you could do as a second / finishing cut....

hmm... but that way, I still need to make sure that the letters are not to massive as then even the smaller bit will go too deep into the material in one step. It is a workaround, but not a solid solution for production :(

Hello Les,

it would be great if you can put this on the list - or may be you already have? :)

Cheers,

It will hopefully be in the next dev release.

Hello Les,

another question: is it planned to add a 4th A-Axis to Sheetcam in future? Or a wrapper Plugin?

Cheers,

What do you want to use the 4th axis for?

To be honest... I did not think about that Sheetcam is 2 1/2D only when asking. The idea was to mill pens, but not "simply round" but with e.g. patterns - but this would require a 3D CAM and a Step File, I assume.

If the pen is a parallel cylinder you could engrave it with SheetCam using the rotary plugin, otherwise you would need a 3D CAM package.
