Safe Z Height While In A Pocket

Post by PK »

Hello,

I have a pocket that I need to carve in the bottom of that pocket. SheetCam's display indicates that it will raise to my +10mm (above the top of the part) so each carve operation rapid has to raise up out of the pocket and then above the part. Is there a way for the safe Z, while in the pocket carve operation, to be referenced off of the pocket bottom's height and not the parts top??

I could use a really small general safe Z height above the top of the part to limit Z travel for the whole job, but that could have problems with other operations. I have an array of parts, so when going to the next duplicate, the Z axis does need to go above the top of the part so I can't create a separate job for the carving only.

Thanks...
Paul

SheetCam doesn't know it is definitely safe to only raise the cutter a small amount. For instance your pocket could be an odd shape with a projection that could get in the way. It therefore errs on the side of caution.

Currently there isn't any way you can tell SheetCam to use a lower rapid clearance height in a pocket.

A perfect example of why folks should be able to understand g-code even if they have a CAM system…. a couple minutes in the actual code and change a few lines and you can keep the tool path the way you want it to go. Some folks will argue that the CAM should do it and I only do one offs and so forth, but the only time staying down is important is for time savings on production, so that is when it’s worthwhile to “customize” the code a bit.

I’ve yet to see a CAM program that does it all “just the way you want it”.
