Text, DraftSight, Sheetcam

Post by Peter Homann »

Hi all,

I've asked this question before a while ago and am hoping that someone can
provide the answer now that DraftSight has been around for some time now.

http://www.3ds.com/products/draftsight/overview/

As far as I can work out, the only text that can be entered into DraftSight is
"SimpleNote" or "Note". When I use these, they are invisible to Sheetcam when
I load in the DXF file.

Does anyone know of a solution to this?

Last time people said to explode the text, but this does not work. I need to
be able to solve this and will need to find a solution by either changing to
another CAD or CAM package.

Cheers,

Peter

Text, DraftSight, Sheetcam

Post by Art Eckstein »

Peter,
Before Draftsight, there were a couple of cad programs that had
"explode text" as an option. Unfortunately, Draftsight does not do this.

My workaround is to do my text in StickFont V1.1 which is a freeware
program that will output either a dxf or gcode.
http://www.ncplot.com/freetools.htm
They also have V2 of the program which is not freeware.

I have it output a dxf and then inport that into my draftsight
drawing for proper placement.
This program will do some neat things like placing the text on an arc
etc. and allow you to convert a ttf file to their format for use in
the drawing.

Hi Peter:

It seems that you are correct-Draftsight will not explode text. I also tried A9CAD, and it will not explode text either.....

I tried to use Draftsight as an AutoCAD replacement earlier this year, and there are just too many things that are missing or work differently to prevent my success. Maybe the paid version would be better, but I havenlttried it.

However, you can draw in Draftsight, save the dxf , open it in Inkscape, explode the text, and resave as dxf. Then import the dxf to SheetCAM as usual.

i will always vote for coreldraw. but we have been coreldraw users since version 6. i hardly use any other program. i use coreldraw even for a word processor.

90 percent of our work is more graphics than actual cad. but coreldraw imports dxf and dwg files just fine. never had a problem with files that customers have sent us.

perhaps others can suggest a free program that will do your text if that is your only problem.

ps  if anyone has a coreldraw > sheetcam question i will be happy to help. my wife and i are in the philippines for the next 18 months. away from our plasma table :( but still designing in coreldraw. and trying to keep up with sheetcam developments. wonderful program.

Sorry-I hit "Send" before I tested out what I wrote. I think Inkscape will NOT explode text that is in a dxf.

I have not been able to find a CAD program that explodes dxf text except for AutoCAD.
